3 special reasons to promote your non-giving seasons….. (Like how that rhymed? Heh....)
All right, so let’s say you need some truly convincing reasons for why it may not be the best idea for you to give this time around. And oh, believe it. There certainly are a few….
But we’re going to dive right in and look at three unique ways in which you can NOT give and still make the other person ---- not to mention yourself ---- come out a winner. And the best part is perhaps you didn’t think this was possible, did you? But it is…
There’s many more reasons out there that we could come up with, of course, but three to get you started are as follows: You’ll teach the receiver an important lesson; you’ll get “ a taste of your own good medicine” as it comes around to you in time; and you’ll potentially set a new example, or “trend”, to follow. Now, how does this all break down??? Read on, good reader, read on….
You’ll teach ---- or simply remind --- the other person of what matters most.
Let’s face it: The tangible isn’t always everything. Sometimes, the notions of waiting, not receiving, or receiving something less than what was expected can teach us an important lesson. And in our over-spoiled, over-gratified, selfish, “I want it all now!!!” Microwave Age culture, that can be a good thing. And we don’t, in fact, need anything to make us truly happy. Happiness is a mindset.
What comes around goes around, but that may not be a bad thing.
So here’s the “other side of the coin” to consider: When you don’t give, the other person --- or even someone else ---- will eventually do the same to you. But don’t think of it as a negative thing….perhaps that turnaround can be, in addition to the Golden Rule in its perfect reverse application, a sweet reminder to you that you really don’t need anything to be happy. And sometimes, gifts are just a luxury; after all, is it not the relationship you should be desiring and favoring the most, that intangible connection you have (or wish to have) with the other person?
Others around you are watching, so why not set a trend?
Let’s say you’re in a public gathering for a big or small event: It could be Christmas Time, someone’s birthday, a special Mother’s Day or Father’s Day event, or even an office party with a gift-swap raffle. Of course, you’re likely expected to give. But do you??? Well, it all depends. Think about this ----- have you ever thought that, by not giving your gift to the other person ‘entitled’, this time around, that you are actually being observed by the other participants….for your ‘non-giving’?
But once again, don’t dismiss this as a bad thing. You’re simply “doing something differently” this time, and it may catch on. Why not teach the ‘receiver’, and the others watching, that it’s sometimes important to not expect to receive but to be thankful and simply “present in the moment” instead? Maybe someone else will fall in love with your idea and use at their next function…..
